over here it is the opposite, the people with no control what so ever are the ones that think crates are evil and their dogs jump on you when you come over and chew up their shit. most people should not have dogs, they don't have the time.

People have a problem with crates because they view it as a cage or jail
The thing with crates is if you start having a problem with you dog years later, like say your old dog cant control his bowels and starts pissing or shitting all over your house. If you never used a crate you cant start at 10 years old cause the dog is not used to it. If you used one you have an option.
What you first stated is true over here too.
And it is usually the people that "show" their dogs that use crates over here and their dogs are so out of control.
One thing that these show people do is, if their dog barks too much, is to have it de-barked, and NOT train it to not bark. So cruel!

Our dogs are outside animals and a crate would take up too much room inside. We tried it once, but he fretted when inside so never got one. He would probably try to break out of it anyway. lol

That's why you have to start them in the crate when they are puppies, if you wait till they are adults they don't understand and can hurt themselves trying to get out.
I have to crate train mine as I train them to bite and when we take them to training and they start to hear the bad guys cracking the whip working the other dogs they get so excited they would absolutely destroy the inside of a car trying to get out at him. (it has happened to people that didnt use crates)
we work with very high drive dogs, not normal house puppies.
